History

On 13 April 2002, "HOOKnSHOOT presented MMA's first EVER sanctioned women's MMA event in the U.S.," which featured an only 17 years old Montoya in the first bout.[4] On 14 November 2003 at Shooto: Warrior Spirit Evolution held in Las Vegas, Nevada, "minutes prior to what would have been the first sanctioned women`s MMA bout in Nevada, Jamie Lyn fell down the escalator dislocating her shoulder and was screaming in pain, forcing the doctors to scrap her bout with Erica Montoya."[5]

In the first female match of the day of the invitation-only Abu Dhabi tournament held in Long Beach, California in 2005, Montoya fought Kyra Gracie. Prior to this fight, "Jiu Jitsu...brought Montoya acclaim in the US and Brazil, but her recent endeavors in No Holds Bar has taken her to Japan where she is gaining more and more recognition."[6]

Loretta Hunt, news editor for Sherdog.com, reports, “I know for a fact the UFC was considering a female bout between Erica Montoya and the late Shelby Walker a few years ago.”[7] About this planned but never realized fight, "Big Dog" Benny Henderson Jr. asked Shelby Walker, “It has been rumored that you may fight Erika Montoya at UFC 51, is there any truth to those rumors?” Walker replied, “Yeah there is truth to those rumors, it has been talked about a lot and when I asked Dana White if he was going to put us on the show he said possibly, so that is where it stands right now. I haven’t heard anything more from this but my biggest dream would be to fight in the UFC.”[8]

Appearance in UFC: Sudden Impact

Although she has not yet competed in the UFC, she did appear in one of their major video game releases. Louis Bedigian of GameZone.com asked Producer Kaoru Koda of Take 2 Licensing, “I've heard that UFC: Sudden Impact will feature at least one female fighter. Is this true? If so, what does she bring to the table?” Koda replied, “Yes, it's true! This time we've brought Erica Montoya into the game. She is a real, undefeated, female Mixed Martial Arts fighter and she ranks at the top of the 120-125 lbs fighters in the world. She was the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion in 2001. She knows her stuff and her character in the game proves it. My personal favorite is her virtually inescapable flying armbar that will even take down the likes of Tim Sylvia, when used properly.”[9]

Gazzy took her division with a tough battle against Erica Montoya, then in the absolute division won a shocker by tapping out Erica in very rapid fashion! Although the finishing hold was an illegal toe hold, Erica showed good sportsmanship by acknowledging the fact she got tapped and allowing Gazzy to advance without controversy where she defeated a very tough Amanda Buckner."[24]
